Gentleness

May believers are familiar with Philip 4:6&7 but the verse that come before it isn’t shared as often.  “Let your gentleness be evident to all”.  What is gentleness?  “It’s the quality of being kind and careful and describes the way someone acts when they are soft and calm to another.”  “It also evidences itself in a willingness to yield.”  These are some things we know from scripture about gentleness.  It’s a fruit of the Spirit. (Gal. 5:22-23)  Gentle words yield great power. (Prov. 25:15) In Matt. 11:29 it tells us that Jesus came to us “gentle and humble in heart.”  It’s something too we should clothe ourselves with. (Col. 3:12)

From what I just shared, what stood out to you about gentleness?  For me it was Jesus’ attitude and disposition.  He is gentle and humble in heart.  When he speaks to your heart, is He harsh or is He gentle.  Jesus is gentle with his children.  Think about the way he treated the woman caught in adultery.  He was gentle in the way he dealt with her sin.  There were men who wanted to stone her to death because of the way she had been living.  Jesus said to them, you who is without sin cast the first stone.  They all left, one by one till it was just her and Jesus standing there.  He told her that he did not condemn her and told her to go and sin no more.  (John 8:1-11)

How has Jesus shown you gentleness in your life?  How can you be exhibiting the fruit of gentleness daily to others?  The writer Emily Bronte wrote in Jane Eyre, “Oh that gentleness!  How far more potent is it than force!”
